99% people would probably say “what ?!”, but not here at Snowminds. Since 2013, each year we have sent a bunch of passionate ski and snowboard instructors to Africa and our friends at Afriski Resort, where they have spent a winter teaching Africans in the snow. It’s just as crazy as it sounds!
Afriski, located at an altitude of 3,000 meters in Lesotho, is a 3-hour drive from the nearest town and is one of the most unique ski areas we can imagine. In the midst of this mountain landscape, Afriski has arisen, driven by fiery souls who dared to believe the impossible. Today, Afriski is a resort with both summer and winter activities where the impossible has succeeded, and with Snowminds you can now take part in the adventure!
Afriski is a small ski area with great ambitions. Although one would not think it possible to work as a ski instructor in Africa, it is certainly possible. In addition to a large, wide ski run there is also a children’s area, certified snow park, après-ski bar, ski hire and festivals such as the season-ending party “Winterfest”. There is also room for approx. 400 African ski tourists who come to experience what few of their friends have; snow and skiing!
In Afriski, as an instructor, you will not only have to teach your guests to ski, but also often be the first to introduce your students to snow! One of our ski instructors Louise says “it’s not uncommon for you to be asked how does it snow and where the snow actually comes from! So prepare for a completely different, and very special, experience.
In South Africa you have 90 days visa, so depending you your travel dates you may be able to spend 14 days travelling, for example, experiencing safari, diving or similar in South Africa with your new colleagues from Afriski. We strongly recommend taking advantage of this, as it has been something our instructors have really enjoyed over the years! The dates are co-ordinated with the ski school manager in Afriski and we are happy to assist with flight booking.
Travel Period:
Please note that the travel dates are flexible and that it is your responsibility to confirm them with the ski school manager in Afriski before you book your flights.
As an experienced instructor, this trip gives you a unique experience as a ski instructor in Africa, as well as the opportunity to travel around Africa and experience, for example, safari, scuba diving or other things on your own or with your new friends from Afriski.
