Life as a Ski Instructor in Norway

When you become a ski instructor in Norway, you’ll quickly experience the unique sense of community that develops among seasonal workers. The Norwegian ski resorts usually have a core team of instructors that expands during peak season, and you will quickly become part of a close-knit team. There is a great passion for skiing, and many hours are spent on the slopes, both during work hours and in your free time, where ski touring and skiing with colleagues is a natural part of the everyday routine. In addition to the instructors, you’ll also meet seasonal workers from restaurants, lifts, ski rentals, hotels, and bars, all of whom help create a cozy and social atmosphere for “seasoners.”

As a ski instructor, you’ll typically live with your colleagues in the resort’s staff accommodations. The standard and layout vary from place to place, but usually, you’ll share an apartment or cabin with other instructors, with a shared kitchen, bathroom, and living room. The ski school provides your uniform and arranges regular training sessions and “clinics” to develop your teaching and skiing skills. Many ski schools also have a staff room where you can store your equipment, have lunch, participate in meetings, or just relax between lessons. The basic salary is usually around 150 NOK per hour.

The season is busiest during Christmas and New Year, the winter holidays in February, and Easter week, while January and March are typically quieter. During these quieter periods, you’ll have the opportunity to improve your skiing or go on trips. Great emphasis is placed on collaboration and team spirit, where commitment, responsibility, and professionalism are key – both within the ski school and in your interactions with guests and other staff members in the area.
