Life as a Ski Instructor in Norway

When you become a ski instructor in Norway, you’ll quickly experience the unique sense of community that develops among seasonal workers. Norwegian ski schools typically have a core team of instructors, which expands during the peak season, and you’ll soon become part of a close-knit team. There is a strong passion for skiing, and many hours are spent on the slopes, both during work hours and in your free time, where ski tours and skiing with colleagues become a natural part of everyday life. In addition to instructors, you’ll also meet seasonal workers from restaurants, lifts, ski rentals, hotels, and bars, all contributing to a cozy and social environment of “seasoners.”

As a ski instructor, you will typically live with your colleagues in the ski school’s staff accommodation. The standard and layout can vary from place to place, but you will often share an apartment or cabin with other instructors, where the kitchen, bathroom, and living room are shared. The ski school provides your uniform and regularly holds training sessions and “clinics” to develop your teaching and skiing skills. Many ski schools also have a staff room where you can store equipment, eat lunch, attend meetings, or simply relax between lessons. The starting wage is typically around 150 NOK per hour.

The season is characterized by busy times during Christmas and New Year’s, the winter holidays in February, and Easter week, while January and March tend to be quieter. During these quieter periods, you’ll have the chance to improve your skiing or go on excursions. There is a strong emphasis on collaboration and teamwork, with commitment, responsibility, and professionalism being key values – both within the ski school and in your interactions with guests and other employees in the area.
