The Snowminds job placement gives you peace of mind when travelling to Canada, as your position as a ski instructor is arranged with Whistler Blackcomb Snow School before departure. You’ll know exactly where you’ll be spending your winter, allowing you to prepare for your season in Whistler with clarity and confidence.
The job placement is conditional on successfully passing your PSIC Level 1 certification, which the majority of Snowminds participants complete during the course. In the event that you do not pass the exam on your first attempt, Snowminds works closely with the ski school to support you and explore possible solutions, so you can still be part of the season and continue developing your skills in the resort.
We’re proud of our long-standing partnerships and structured approach, which have consistently enabled Snowminds participants to transition from training into work at the ski school. Our focus is to ensure you arrive in Whistler with a clear pathway into instructing and the support you need to make the most of your winter in Canada.
The first 4 weeks of accommodation during the course are included in Whistler ski instructor course. We arrange seasonal accommodation for you for the remainder of the winter. We work closely with the ski school and property owners to arrange suitable seasonal accommodation for you, either in staff housing or in privately rented accommodation. .
In either case you’ll be in shared accommodation with other seasonal workers and/or Snowminds instructors, creating a strong community feel together with your future colleagues.
The living situation in Whistler can vary depending on housing availability. Accommodation is often in older houses, staff housing, or shared apartments, where a dorm-style setup is both cosy and social. It’s important to keep an open mind, as seasonal accommodation in Whistler will likely be very different from what you are used to at home or from a typical ski holiday, such as staying in a 5-star ski chalet. For this reason, it’s best not to expect luxury for your winter accommodation. However, we’re absolutely certain that your winter home will quickly feel like just that – a home – and that your fellow instructors will become your new family. Don’t be surprised if you feel a little emotional when the season comes to an end and it’s time to move out.
If you are offered a spot in staff accommodation, the rent is typically subsidized by the resort and is deducted from your pay slips. Staff accommodation spots are very limited and are arranged and allocated in close cooperation with the ski school.
If you stay in private accommodation, rent will not be deducted from your salary – your accommodation will be pre-paid before your departure. While this requires an upfront payment, it provides a simple, stress-free package that gives you the simplicity, security of having your accommodation arranged for the season. In Whistler, private accommodation costs will vary depending on housing type, but typically will be a 5 month accommodation at 1000 EUR a month per person.
Please keep in mind that while Snowminds helps secure your position, your official employer for the season is the ski school. This means that all work expectations, daily responsibilities, and schedules are defined entirely by the ski school management.
While we will gladly provide guidance based on past seasons and ski school expectations, please note that Snowminds cannot guarantee your specific work hours, schedule, or lesson types.
As a new instructor at Whistler, you should expect to work with young children daily and will likely be based within the children’s programs for the entire season. The ski school expects all instructors to arrive on time, bring a great attitude, and consistently deliver an excellent experience for guests. In return, past Snowminds instructors in Whistler have reported having very busy, rewarding schedules!
Wages are paid at an hourly rate and depend on your certification level.
In general, it is very different from what instructors earn and spend during the season since habits/personal budgets and seasonal work hours can fluctuate so much from year to year. So in general we recommend bringing savings with you so you can make the most of the season experience.
TRANSPORT + ARRIVAL
We always try our best to book you on the same flight with other Snowminds instructors, or if this is not possible, arrange that you will arrive at a similar time.
When you arrive in Canada, there are a few practical things that we need to arrange so that you will be able to start employment at your ski school. This includes setting up a bank account and a Social Insurance Number.
This means that we stay a night together in Vancouver before traveling to Whistler, and your new home for the winter. Your Snowminds Team leader will help you with these practicalities and help you settle in.
CAN I VISIT OTHER DESTINATIONS?
There will certainly be an opportunity for this, especially during the quieter periods. Canada is a big country and the distances between some resorts can be long, which can make for some epic road trip opportunities. Some instructors decide to buy a used car together or rent a car.. In addition, there are possibilities for bus-routes between some destinations in Canada.
RETURN TRAVEL
Your flight ticket is a return ticket, so the return flight journey is included in the price. We book a return date based on your wishes. The transport to the airport when you go home, however, is NOT included, as many travel on, have to go home on different dates or otherwise.
If you want inspiration for round trips etc. we can always assist with this and help arrange. It is also something we want to talk about for the kick off event, so you can already start dreaming about further travel opportunities.
If staying for summer sounds appealing, you can combine your winter with a summer season by taking our level 1 Mountain Bike instructor course in Whistler.
If you change your mind while you are in Canada and would like to change your return flight date, then there will be a change fee and possible flight fare price differences, but we will happily look into the different options and possibilities for you.
All training and certification on our ski instructor courses in Canada are conducted in English, and it is a requirement that you speak English at a conversational level in order to attend the course and work as an instructor.
Snowminds partners with ski schools across both Eastern and Western Canada. In Whistler, you’ll work in a fully English-speaking environment while teaching guests from all over the world, giving you valuable experience in international communication and customer service within one of North America’s most renowned ski resorts.
Since there is a job placement included in this package, you will need to obtain a work permit before your departure. We will provide support and guidance to help you apply for the necessary visa, which gives you the right to work and travel in Canada for up to either 12 or 24 months (depending on which country you are from).
There is a limited amount of Working Holiday Visas allocated to each country and the process can take a long time. Therefore, we recommend that you reserve your spot on the course as early as possible so that we can help you with the process and get the best chances of getting your hands on a visa.
