Being 50+ on a ski camp in Austria

“it’s a great way to meet people who share the same passion, where age is no barrier”

This year marks our second time in two years joining a Snowminds camp. We’re a “vintage” couple from Amsterdam, and since we have vastly different skiing levels, Snowminds is the perfect solution for us!

Being 50+ on a ski camp in Austria is a great way to meet people who share the same passion, where age is no barrier. At the end of the day, we return to our cozy apartment in the Bergparadies hotel and share stories over dinner in the restaurant with our group. The tales of icy slopes and walls of mist are always “bigger than life”—but as they say, never ruin a good story with facts! We laughed endlessly and had so much fun.

Each morning, we discussed our plans over a generous breakfast buffet. They even had gluten-free bread that tasted better than what we find in Amsterdam! With over 150 skiers in the group, there’s always a high chance of finding great people to connect with—even if you’re traveling solo. The group is wonderfully diverse, with participants from all over the world. It’s a fantastic opportunity to practice English, while helping one another when it’s not their native language. I met people from Florida (USA), Australia, Jordan, Lithuania, Belarus, Denmark, the UK, and more. It created such a vibrant and relaxed atmosphere.

During the camp week, you get four hours of ski lessons daily—a fantastic experience with personal tips to improve your performance on the slopes. I’ve been skiing all my life, yet I learned so much from my ski instructor, Flor. She had a knack for pinpointing small tweaks that made a big difference in my technique.
In the afternoons, you can choose to take a few more runs down the mountain or unwind at the large spa with a pool in the nearby village. It’s a perfect way to recharge after an active day. In the evenings, Snowminds organizes various activities you can join. From game nights to attending the German lessons alongside the group doing the Anwärter course, there’s always something fun to do. Or, you can enjoy a lively après-ski session at Thomaselli, the bar conveniently located next to the ski lift. Dorfgastein is a charming, small ski village with a cozy, authentic Austrian vibe. It could almost be called “Egger-stein,” since the Egger family seems to own almost everything in town: Egger Hotel, Egger Restaurant, Egger Ski, Egger Bank, Egger Café—you name it!

Once again, we had an amazing time, learning, laughing, and making new friends. We’re already planning to return in 2026 for the two-week camp—because one week just isn’t enough! We can’t recommend this experience enough—it’s truly a unique combination of adventure, connection, and fun.
