Become A Snowboard Instructor and Shred Champagne Powder

The Dream in Canada

Canada is sought after by skiers and snowboarders alike because of it’s friendly open door policy: Everyone is welcome and treated equally on the mountain. For snowboard instructors, Canada is particularly attractive because it offers some of the best off-piste and backcountry opportunities anywhere in the world. At the same time, you can expect to delve deep into North American culture, with hockey, massive burgers and boundless nature all around you.

For starters, you definitely do not need to be a superstar or expert to become a snowboard instructor. Like most things in life, it’s all about motivation and dedication. That’s why Snowminds offers you this 3 week snowboard instructor training course, so that with personalized instruction from our experienced coaches you can quickly begin working as a paid snowboard instructor in Canada with a job guarantee for a full winter season.

A better place to freeride and shred consistently than in Canada? Man, if you figure that one out, call me."

- Anouk, Snowminds Instructor

The Training

Through a close partnership with the Canadian Ski Association and some of Canada’s most renowned ski schools, Snowminds offers you the opportunity to become a CASI certified snowboard instructor in Canada. Over 3 weeks, you will complete a training course that focuses on your technique and development both on- and off- the piste. Our experienced coaches will guide you and build your skills, no matter what your level is on day 1. By the end, you will be prepared to crush your Level 1 exam and achieve your certification. Since 2014, Snowminds is proud to say that 100% of our instructors have passed their Level 1 exam in Canada.

With your Level 1 certification in hand, you will now immediately begin working as a snowboard instructor with a job guarantee for a full season at your designated resort. For many instructors, this may mean going from your training course in Sun Peaks or Big White to your final destination in Mount Washington or Marmot Basin. Regardless of your designated ski school resort, Snowminds promises you a super cosy community and a ski school team that will welcome you with open arms.

The Instructor Life

In Canada, you will work as a snowboard instructor at one of our close partner ski schools, such as Whistler or Cypress (and many others), and get the opportunity to teach a diverse mix of local and international guests. This working experience should offer you some more insight into North American culture, the way people live, and how they spend their holiday vacations. Canadians are also known worldwide as super friendly people and your ski school colleagues will most likely be no different. For most ski instructors, your average day involves lessons in the morning and early afternoon hours followed by free ski time with your friends and colleagues in the afternoons and evenings. It’s a lifestyle most people can only dream of.

After your winter season ends, typically in mid- to late April, you will then have the chance to travel around Canada and the U.S. with your friends and fellow Snowminds instructors. For you, maybe that means doing a road trip to the national parks, like Banff, or hitting the west coast of California for waves. Either way, our experienced staff is there to help you every step of the way to keep the dream alive.

The Snowminds job placement and how it works

The job placement means that we will make sure you have a job at the skischool, after you have successfully passed your instructor training. You will already know at which destination you will spend your season at, before departure. The job placement is naturally conditional on your ski and snowboard teacher training, which over 90% of our students successfully pass. Even in the event you do not receive your certification, we still do everything we can to ensure you a job. That way you enjoy your season as an instructor like everyone else and then retake your certification. With six years of experience to date, we are proud to say we have always been able to find a job for 100% of our instructors after graduation from our training course.

Your wage depends on many factors, but you can expect to make around 15+ CAD per hour as a level 1 instructor and also get different bonus opportunities, for example, tips and extra private lessons if a guest wishes to book a private lesson and requests you personally.

In terms of financial expectations, let’s be clear: the job as an instructor will not make you rich money wise, but definitely rich with experiences. As a newly-educated instructor, you are typically on the “bottom of the food chain” regarding work. In other words, the more experienced instructors get first preference, but the more you show your passion and desire to work hard, the better. The amount you make as an instructor therefore often depends on your own motivation, your working ethics and your previous working experience.

In general, it is very different from what our instructors earn and spend during the season since habits/personal budgets vary so much, but we recommend having a minimum of 2000 CAD in pocket money so you can make the most of the season.

An average salary for a starting instructor in Canada is around 10-12 CAD per hour. In addition to this there are often opportunities for bonuses, for example a guest may wish to extend their lesson with you as an instructor. The job as an instructor won’t get you rich money wise, but definitely rich with experiences. We recommend bringing pocket money which will allow you to have the freedom to fully enjoy your season. The pay also depends on your own motivation, your working ethics and your previous working experience.

Training Course Housing

During the course you’ll have arranged housing with all the other Snowminds Instructors. You’ll have a fantastic community like feel together with all your future colleagues.

Ski Season Housing

Wherever you go, Snowminds guarantees you arranged housing. The ski schools in Canada generally do not include housing in your contract as they work with a lot of local staff. Therefor we work together with the ski schools to arrange good and fitting housing for you. As the housing is not part of your contract, the rent isn’t deducted from your salary but payed separately. The living situation differs from resort to resort. Typically you share the accommodation with a handfull of instructors. Regardless of the solution, we’re absolutely certain that this will quickly become your new home and colleagues your new family. We’re sure that you’ll have a little tear in your eye when the season is at its last chapter and you’re about to move out of your home.

Return flights, to/from Canada and a major airport is included in our Canada course packages. We always try our best to book you on the same flight with other Snowminds instructors, or if this is not possible, arrange that you will arrive at a similar time.

When you arrive in Canada, there are a few practical things that we need to arrange so that you will be able to start employment at your ski school.  Depending on the location of your destination, this may mean that we stay a night together in the city before traveling to your new home for the winter. Your Snowminds Team leader will help you with these practicalities. Wherever your destination, we arrange transportation from the airport to your accommodation when you arrive in Canada.

There will certainly be an opportunity for this, especially during the quieter periods. Canada is a big country and the distances between some resorts can be long, which can make for some epic road trip opportunities. The best way to get around is by buying a car together with those you live with or renting a car. It will typically be possible to visit ski resorts “nearby” at cheap prices through the ski school. They will also in some cases be able to provide cheaper lift passes to other areas. In addition, there are possibilities for bus-routes between the destinations.

Your flight ticket is a return ticket, so the return flight journey is included in the price. We book a return date based on your wishes. The transport to the airport when you go home, however, is NOT included, as many travel on, have to go home on different dates or otherwise.

If you want inspiration for round trips etc. we can always assist with this and help arrange. It is also something we want to talk about for the kick off event, so you can already start dreaming about further travel opportunities.

If you change your mind while you are in Canada and would like to change your return flight date, then there will be a change fee from the airline and possible flight fare price differences, but we will happily looking into the different options and possibilities for you.

The training and certification on all our courses in Canada will be in English and it is a requirement that you speak conversational English to attend the course.

Snowminds partners with ski schools in both Eastern and Western Canada, and our destination resorts in Quebec, such as Mont-Saint-Anne, Stoneham and Bromont, there are great opportunities to develop your French language skills.

Since there is a job placement included in this package, you will need to obtain a work permit before your departure. We will provide support and guidance to help you apply for the necessary visa, which gives you the right to work and travel in Canada for up to either 12 or 24 months (depending on which country you are from).

There is a limited amount of Working Holiday Visas allocated to each country and the process can take a long time. Therefore, we recommend that you secure your spot on the team as early as possible so that we can help you with the process and get the best chances of getting your hands on a visa.
